Food Therapy For Excess Heat And Dryness

COOLING FOOD THERAPY GUIDELINES

  • Hydrate - start with water. Sometimes you keep drinking but it doesn’t feel like water is being absorbed because you need to add electrolytes. You can use a not overly sweet electrolyte powder (Drip Drop brand) or look up home made electrolyte recipes.

  • Switchel, swizzle, ginger-water, or haymaker's punch (all the same electrolyte beverage)

  • Can add herbal infused Oxymels (vinegar + honey infusions) to cold or hot water / bubbly water or herbal tea.

  • Eat 50% fruit and veggies

  • Yin tonic foods, especially melons and cucumbers

  • Cooling/hydrating herbal teas: Hibiscus, mints, burdock, horsetail

  • Reduce Coffee/Alcohol/Spicy Foods by 50%

FOOD THERAPY FOR MOISTURIZATION

I recommend drinking cold-infused marshmallow root for at least one week while working on re-hydrating (add to any tea or juice). Marshmallow root infusion soothes an internal hot and dry system. ***

Focus on foods that have a natural gel to them or a mucilaginous quality:

  • fruit

  • gelatin

  • goji berries

  • mulberries

  • jujubes

  • tapioca

  • chia seeds

  • oatmeal

  • boba - not caffeinated

  • okra

  • jicama

  • nopales

  • aloe vera

  • irish moss

  • sea moss

  • coconut water

***If you are taking prescription medications you can skip the marshmallow root protocol as studies have shown that it can weaken the effects of some medications.

What are some additional things to cut back on when treating excess heat and dryness?

  • Hot foods

  • hot yoga and other super heating cardio

  • cut back smoking 50%

  • cut back wine and coffee 50% and if drinking either of these, drink lots of cooling water after.
