What Is Pelvic Steaming?
Pelvic steaming is when a person sits, squats, or kneels over a pot of warm herbal steam for 10-30 minutes depending on what is being addressed with the steaming. The herbs infused into the steam water are specific to the conditions of the steamer.
The amount of time a person engages in this body care practice depends on what plan the peristeam hydrotherapist has recommended, and the person’s interest and dedication to the process. Commonly it takes 3-6, or 9 months to address issues, but conditions that are chronic (persistent) sit at the longer end of that timetable. Once the specific issues that brought you to pelvic steaming are resolved, the frequency of steaming can be reduced to once a week, or even just once a month to maintain optimum pelvic health.
Historically, a pelvic steaming practice was used in many lineages worldwide for maintaining pelvic health, and in the birthing realm. In some cultures, the practice was maintained and we call these folk or indigenous practitioners who have had the knowledge passed on to them. For the rest of us, where this knowledge was lost (or eradicated through the process of colonization), we are experiential learners studying the case studies of those who have practiced longer than we have. Either way, pelvic steaming is currently considered an effective folk practice that many other specialists are working with to enhance their own therapies, such as: acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, pelvic floor therapists, nurse practitioners, naturopaths, midwives, doulas, gynecologists and fertility specialists.
Steaming is an elemental cooperation between plants, fire, water, and people.
